What Is An HVAC System?

Even though it’s known of and widely used, the HVAC system still manages to mystify a great number of people who use it. Knowing about the HVAC is always useful, especially when it comes to maintaining the system.

Hence, the team at ServicePlus Heating and Cooling would like you to know about HVAC systems.

What Does HVAC Mean?

The acronym HVAC breaks down into three components.

The Heating component’s main purpose is to provide warmth to a building, usually by a centralized system. A typical heating system would increase a building’s temperature by heating water, air, or steam in a chosen room (like a furnace in a house). The heat is transferred through the building by conduction, convection, and radiation.

The Ventilation component of the HVAC system has to maintain the quality of air in the building. It does so by moving air in and out of the building to facilitate control of the temperature and replace oxygen in the air. In doing so, it also removes any contaminants like smoke, dust, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide.

The Air Conditioning component introduces cooling and humidity control to the building. Air passes by an evaporator coil that absorbs both latent and sensible energy (heat) on its through the system. Using refrigerant, the energy travels outside to the outdoor unit while the compressor increases the temperature and pressure so the energy will travel smoothly outside. It’s critically important to have your unit frequently maintained by a certified technician. Regular maintenance can reduce energy costs by as much as 30%, extend the lifespan of your unit, and keep your unit running up to manufacturer standards.

These systems work together to keep users warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Each component can be separate but combining two systems, like heating and AC, to work simultaneously with a single system is a frequent occurrence.

Maintaining Your HVAC System

A lot of issues can plague an HVAC system at any time and they can become worse or exacerbate other problems very quickly. As such, HVAC maintenance needs to be proactive, not reactive. Clogged filters, leaks, dirty coils, corrosion, etc, need to be checked on a regular basis.

It helps to have a checklist of standard tasks that have to be completed periodically. These tasks will help you keep up with any problems that crop up regularly. Tasks like clearing any debris and freeing space around the system should be done daily. Inspecting the cooling system for leaks is a task that should be done once a year (when temps surpass 21C). 1″ wide air filters should be replaced every 30 days (Merv 8 Pleated). 4-5″ Air Filters can be replaced every 3-4 months (Merv 11-13 Pleated). Other tasks can be performed seasonally.

If you detect any problems, please contact an HVAC technician to fix them. Tinkering around an HVAC system if you aren’t qualified can create even more problems that will take longer to fix.
