Air conditioner (ac) outside all ready for summer after completing it's spring home checklist

How to Get Your Air Conditioner Ready for Summer (Spring Checklist)

As the snow melts and warmer weather rolls in across the area, it’s the perfect time to get your air conditioner ready for the summer season ahead.

A few simple steps now can help prevent breakdowns, improve efficiency, and keep your home cool and comfortable all summer long.

1. Remove Your Air Conditioner Cover

If you covered your outdoor unit for the winter, don’t forget to remove it before turning your system on.

Leaving the cover in place can:

  • Restrict airflow

  • Trap moisture inside the unit

  • Reduce cooling performance

Once removed, take a moment to check that the area around your unit is clear of leaves, debris, or anything that could block airflow. It’s also a great time to see how the cover is holding up, and if you should look into getting a replacement for next winter.

2. Check the Outdoor Disconnect Switch

Your AC unit has a disconnect switch located near the outdoor unit. This is often turned off during the winter months.

Before starting your system:

  • Make sure the disconnect is set to ON

  • Confirm the unit has power

This is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner won’t start in the spring.

3. Turn Your AC Breaker Back On

Head to your electrical panel and locate the breaker for your air conditioner.

  • If it’s off, switch it back ON

  • If it trips again, avoid resetting it repeatedly and have it inspected

4. Set Your Humidifier to Summer Mode

If your home has a whole-home humidifier, it should be adjusted for the air conditioning season ahead.

  • Set the damper to the summer position

  • Turn the humidifier control off

This helps prevent excess humidity in your home during warmer months.

5. Book Your Air Conditioner Maintenance Early

Spring is the best time to schedule your AC maintenance, before the summer rush begins.

A professional tune-up can:

  • Improve system efficiency

  • Catch small issues before they turn into costly repairs

  • Extend the life of your equipment

Regular maintenance doesn’t just keep your system running, it helps it run better. According to Natural Resources Canada, improving energy efficiency can reduce overall energy use and operating costs.

A well-maintained air conditioner doesn’t just run, it runs efficiently and reliably when you need it most.

Regular maintenance helps your system use less energy, deliver more consistent cooling, and reduce the risk of breakdowns during peak summer heat.

In many cases, proper maintenance can also lower operating costs while improving overall comfort throughout your home.

Stay Cool This Summer

Getting your AC ready for summer doesn’t have to be complicated.

A few small checks now can make a big difference when temperatures rise.

If you’re unsure about any of these steps—or simply want peace of mind heading into the season—having your system professionally inspected is always a smart move.
